This SICSA Education sponsored event marks the official launch of the new Computer Science Education research group at the Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS), University of Strathclyde Glasgow. The event aligns with the goals of SICSA Education in terms of enhancing collaborations across SICSA institutions at national level and representing common interests.
Target audience
Early to mid-career academics with a focus on education, involved in teaching Computing Science and related subjects at SICSA member institutions.
Objectives
This event will provide delegates an opportunity for networking and investigating/establishing permanent collaborations: i) SICSA Education Learning & Teaching Scholars will be given the opportunity to talk about their current pedagogical research and scholarship themes and present their posters created in the context of the SICSA Education Learning & Teaching Scholars Programme to a wider audience, and ii) delegates will familiarise with the research and scholarship activities at the University of Strathclyde and other SICSA institutions. Additionally, delegates will benefit from an invited talk by a senior academic on pedagogical research and scholarship.

Professor Debbie Willison is Deputy Associate Principal (Online Learning and Teaching) and Vice Dean Academic for the Faculty of Science. Her interests lie in student transitions, Education for Sustainability, enhancement of student employability skills and the use of technology, including online and blended learning, to invigorate the learner journey and enhance the student experience.
– 2:40pm – 2:55pm, 10 mins plus 5 mins for Q&A: “How to learn a new language: A novel introductory programming course”, Dr Matthew Barr, Senior Lecturer, University of Glasgow
‘How to Learn a New Language’ is an introductory programming course, delivered during the first semester of a work-based Software Engineering degree programme, or apprenticeship. Students are introduced to foundational programming concepts, up to and including object-oriented principles. The course takes a language agnostic approach, using examples from a range programming languages and highlighting the underlying similarities and key differences between them. The course has received positive feedback from students, preparing them to succeed both at university and in the workplace.

A small team from our Computer Science Education research group proposed (and will deliver) a workshop on Blended Learning for Computer Science education at Computer Education Practice – CEP 2023. Dr Martin Goodfellow will present a summary and outcomes on behalf of the team.
– 4:10pm – 4:15pm: Conclusions by the organiser & future steps.
– 4:15pm – 4:30pm, Networking: Delegates will be given some time to informally talk to each other before leaving the event.
