Propose a SICSA event
General principles & guidance
SICSA is driven by our academic community and events are a great way to build and maintain relationships across Scotland across disciplines. We encourage researchers to organise activities across disciplines, themes and institutions.
We also expect events to be open to staff and students from any of our institutions, and free (or very low cost) to attend. For this reason, we encourage online and hybrid events wherever suitable to maximise participation and benefit.
A core priority for SICSA is facilitating networking and collaboration between and across all our institutions, so we expect proposals to outline how multiple institutions will be involved with and benefit from a proposed activity.
We are especially supportive of activities that may lead to grant proposals involving multiple SICSA institutions.
Types of activities and events
There is no limit to the type of event or activity that can be proposed, but some examples of activities we have supported are:
- Small to medium scale meetings for networking and collaboration
- Workshops
- Symposiums
- Guest lectures
- Seasonal schools and bootcamps
- Skill sharing or training events
- Sandpits
- Outreach activities
- Pre-conference showcases (where SICSA colleagues present work accepted to an international conference, e.g. Pre-CHI Day)
Funding and eligible expenditure
Where applications for funding are made along with a proposal, indicative costs should be included in the budget.
SICSA funding can be used for catering, consumables, and travel/subsistence for invited speakers or participants related to the activity or event.
Funding cannot be used to pay invited guest speakers salary or honoraria.
SICSA can purchase consumables or catering on your behalf or SICSA can reimburse your institution for total costs via invoice after the event. Some travel expenses can be claimed on an individual basis if receipts and invoices are provided.
Process and timeline
Proposals and applications for funding can be submitted at any time, and will be assessed by members of the SICSA Directorate and Research Committee, with outcomes communicated within two weeks.
If your proposal is accepted and/or funded, you are expected to provide SICSA with a short report within two weeks of the activity, including information about attendance, outcomes, outputs and expenditure.
Other support
Regardless of the level of funding we can provide, SICSA aims to support all activities at our member institutions with event planning, media and marketing. Please get in touch if you have any questions before submitting a proposal.
If you have an existing event, activity, publication or opportunity you would like to promote via SICSA’s networks, please email admin@sicsa.ac.uk.
