Traditionally, knowledge based solutions have been the de-facto method of authentication to both local and remote resources. Multi-factor authentication methods for the purpose of automatically verifying someone’s identity (positive authentication) have been limited to possession based tokens and knowledge based solutions, while biometrics have been contained to high security, governmental and military applications and have not become mainstream in the civilian world. In this presentation, we will investigate the use of smartphones for authentication and talk about architecture for a multifactor authentication system that can combine knowledge, possession, and biometrics based authentication schemes.
