Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) was recently proposed to improve the flexibility of network service provisioning and reduce the time to market of new services. By leveraging virtualization technologies and commercial off-the-shelf programmable hardware, NFV decouples the software implementation of network functions from the underlying hardware. This talk will start with a brief overview of NFV, including its requirements and architectural framework. It will then present a few use cases of NFV, summarize its research challenges and provide several future research directions. This talk will end with a description of EdgePlex, a flexible and reliable provider edge platform that decomposes and virtualizes the functions performed by a traditional edge router.
