Frequently Asked Questions

I do not live in Europe or the UK and I am not a European citizen. Can I apply for a SICSA studentship?

Yes - SICSA studentships are open to excellent students from anywhere in the world

Will I have to pay overseas student fees if I am not resident in an EU country?

The fee charged is a matter for the admitting university. SICSA makes a contribution to fees at the Home/EU level which is considerably less than the standard overseas fee. However, a number of SICSA universities have agreed to provide support for SICSA students so that no additional fees are payable. However, any additional award is not automatic and you have to discuss the fees charged with the admitting university. If your application is accepted, we will let you know if any further fees are payable.

Why do I have to fill in both a SICSA form and a university form?

Each university has its own system for handling postgraduate applications and the costs of integrating that with the SICSA system are very high. So, the easiest solution is two forms. However, the SICSA form should only take a few minutes to complete once you have assembled the material needed for your university application.

What happens if I am not offered a studentship at my first preference university?

Your application will be considered by all of the universities that you have listed and each university will decide if they wish to support it. If you 1st preference university does not support your application but the SGA Board decides you are eligible for a studentship, then one of the other universities will be in touch with you and ask if you wish to apply to them.

Can I defer taking up a SICSA studentship until the following year?

Normally, no although we may consider a deferral in exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness)

Do I have to work within one of the SICSA themes?

We will consider applications from exceptional candidates in any area of computer science. However, we have identified these themes as important for the development of SICSA and so may give preference to students whose work falls within one or more of the themes.
