Future Cities Theme Workshop 1: New Research Challenges and Directions

Future Cities is an emerging topic that bridges from computer science to urban planning and development, and to social and political issues related to city life, citizenship and sustainability. Also given labels such as ‘Smart Cities’ and ‘Smart Citizens’, this is a topic of rising socio–economic importance. It is beginning to receive a strong push by government, industry and research funders such as the TSB, EPSRC and EU.
The first workshop within this short-term SICSA theme is intended to bring together academics across SICSA to set out new research challenges. Several projects in SICSA sites are already doing work related to this theme, and this workshop is not intended to look back on them but rather to use them as starting points for new concepts and directions. Our hope is that academics and researchers will collectively clarify and prioritise core research agendas in this new domain, and take first steps towards fruitful new collaborations and empowering new funding proposals. The second workshop on this theme, to be held in the new year in Edinburgh, will invite ideas for such first steps, and widen discussion to include broader impact and partnerships with citizen groups, city authorities, industry and beyond.
