SICSA is pleased to welcome Professor Vijay Kumar from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, USA to Heriot Watt University, Colin Maclaurin Building, Room CMS.01 on Friday 23 June to talk about “A Security Shield for Medical Domain””

Abstract:
Unlike non-medical data, the medical domain is relatively more vulnerable to security threats. Currently personal information such as social security number go for $35-$40 whereas a few bytes of patient medical record (PMR) go for $80-$100. Recently a number of hospitals in the USA and the UK were successfully hacked, some of which paid enormous amount of money to hackers to get their system back. This is one of the reasons cybersecurity has become a highly crowded research discipline. Note unlike non-medical data (resume, job history, salary, etc.), medical data is relatively omnipresent; in shopping mall, convenient stores, mobile hospitals, etc. In the USA, many convenient stores have urgent care or home treatment facilities, have dispensaries, etc. They deal with PMR (patient medical record) regularly and are easy target for hackers. They can mount software and hardware attack. The issues “can we ever manage to provide complete security to PMR?”

In this seminar, we take up this challenge and discuss innovative software and hardware approaches to answer this question. We do not focus on a particular current research scheme, rather we talk about our approaches: hardware and software.

The seminar will engage students, faculty and if possible medical professionals for a productive discussion.
