SICSA continues to grow as a world-class grouping of excellent researchers in computer science and informatics and there are a range of vacancies occurring regularly across Scotland's SICSA Universities. Vacancies should be applied for directly to the recruiter, not via SICSA.
 
SICSA has been awarded more than £18 million in funding from the Scottish Funding Council and universities to appoint senior and junior academics in informatics and computer science. Excellence is the key criterion for appointment rather than topic area but we are particularly interested in making appointments to support our research in the SICSA theme areas. All SICSA appointments will be advertised on these pages, as well as locally within the relevant institutions. 
The SICSA Graduate Academy also offers up to 20 Prize Studentships per year to the very best Computing Science and Informatics students from across the world. Software Development Engineer - Amazon

About Us:  We are looking for outstanding candidates to join us as full-time Software Development Engineers. Successful candidates will have built multiple high-performance, stable, scalable systems that have been successfully deployed in a business setting. You will have a system-wide, architectural view of the solutions that you build. You will also have strong technical ability, a focus on the customer experience, great teamwork and communication skills, and a motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced environment.

You will work as part of an Agile team at our development centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, launching and growing new initiatives for Amazon's global websites. You will play a leadership role in your team – they will look to you for advice on the business, technology and operations for your initiatives, giving you the responsibility and authority to ensure success. You will be involved in every aspect of the process - from idea generation, business analysis and technical design through to software development across a variety of technologies. Your systems will meet remarkably high standards of performance and reliability, and will operate at massive scale, 24x7.

Basic Qualifications Several years’ experience in a software engineering/development role. Computer Science Honours degree (2:1 or better) or postgraduate study (applicants with a degree in a related discipline who have demonstrated a strong grounding in Computer Science and significant experience in Software Engineering will also be considered).

Essential skills:
  • · Demonstrated strong object-oriented design and coding skills in Java (or equivalent languages such as C++/C#)
  • · Scripting languages (e.g. shell, Ruby, Perl, Python, etc.)
  • · Strong computer science grounding in a broad range of algorithms and data-structures, OS fundamentals, programming languages and systems architecture
  • · Advanced coding skills (e.g. concurrency, profiling and performance optimization)
  • · Design and architecture (e.g. design patterns, web services, especially high-scale, high-availability, multi-tier distributed systems)
  • · Best-practice software engineering including Agile methodologies, unit testing, refactoring, source control management, continuous integration and build processes
  • · A proven track record of mentoring more junior engineers
  • · Strong analytical and excellent problem solving skills
  • · Strong written and verbal English communications skills
  • · The candidate will be highly pragmatic - a do-er as well as a thinker; we use technology to solve real-world problems expediently to achieve spectacular business returns

Preferred Qualifications Experience with any of the following strongly regarded:
  • SQL, database design, optimization and administration
  • Web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, JQuery, Flash and ActionScript, Ruby on Rails)
  • Experience with data mining and analysis of large scale data (e.g. machine learning, statistical analysis)
  • Linux/UNIX (command-line tools, operations)

- Understanding or Exposure to Agile Development.

- Exposure to or interested in learning Big Data Technologies.

As a graduate you will be developing Enterprise Security Software working with experienced developers using SCRUM project management methodology. We are developing a highly disruptive technology with Google like potential in the security market.

Technical Writers - Edinburgh

Function

As a technical writer you will support the knowledge management of the Avaloq Banking System. Your work in one of the core teams will contribute to providing our customers and partners with clear answers to their questions regarding configuration, implementation and functionality of the Avaloq Banking System. During a structured training period, you will learn about our product and our processes.
  • Writing, updating and proof-reading of user manuals and parameterisation guides, using a state-of-the-art Content Management System
  • Planning and scheduling
  • Gathering and editing of subject-specific knowledge
  • Quality assurance of technical documents
  • Collaboration with internal subject-matter experts Education
  • University degree in Computer Science, Economics, Languages or similar fields
